Recovering waste heat

50% of the required power to produce silicon metal at the FerroPem site in Anglefort (French Alps region) is lost as waste heat in flue gases.

The WHIN project aims at recovering this heat to generate electricity.

An innovative demonstrator

Flue gases are headed into a heat exchanger, where a heat transfer fluid loop passes through.

This fluid is used in an ORC-type system (Organic Rankine Cycle).

Steam is pumped into a turbine, which in turn makes an alternator rotate and produce electricity.
